Experience and enthusiasm: Micromine’s winning formula

MICROMINE’s employees number more than 200 across 18 offices worldwide, but in just a handful of people there sits more than 100 years’ of collective experience with the Micromine software alone. And that experience – coupled with new recruits – is shaping the evolution of the Micromine exploration and 3D mine design solution.

“We’ve always known that we’ve had an incredible wealth of experience and expertise among our ranks, but a quick calculation has revealed the true extent of that legacy,” said Mark Gabbitus, Micromine Product Strategy Manager, who is a bit of a ‘newbie’ when compared to some, having been with the team for three years.

“The collective service to the Micromine product of just six of our senior team members tops 127 years.”

  • Denis Zibarev – Senior Software Architect, Micromine : 14 years
  • Scott Pleiter – Micromine Software Development Manager: 15 years
  • Frank Bilki – Technical Product Manager, Micromine: 19 years
  • Ivan Zelina – Chief Technology Officer: 20 years
  • Craig Dufty – Senior Software Architect, Micromine: 26 years
  • Paul Hooykaas – Special Projects, Micromine: 33 years

Anyone who thinks that old chestnut about not being able to teach old dogs new tricks is a truism should look to MICROMINE to see that myth dispelled.

“Whilst we are in a very fortunate position to have so much experience in our team, we also have a strong focus on developing the next generation of industry talent,” said Mr Gabbitus.

“We have nurtured relationships with universities across the globe, inspiring and challenging young minds and opening up our ‘think tank’ with new perspectives, new ideas and new ways of doing things.

“We’ve augmented our team with bright young junior developers and graduates to create a great mix of experience and new enthusiasm. Some 7 talented junior developers have joined our close-knit and collaborative team over the past three years alone.

“This mix of experience and new talent is proving a winning formula. The Micromine product keeps evolving to meet the needs of clients today – and tomorrow.”

Constant, yet considered, evolution is at the heart of Micromine, a comprehensive and easy-to-use exploration and mine design solution with integrated tools for modelling, estimation, design, optimisation and scheduling. And it’s an evolution where the client has remained the focus, where their evolving needs guide product development and innovation.

New versions of the leading mining design solution are released regularly to include new features and enhancements to improve user experience and make clients’ jobs easier.

Micromine 2020 is due for release in November 2019, bringing together detailed geoscience analytics with sophisticated 3D modelling and mine design software. The software enhancements include new charting tools, a new unfolding tool for model interpolation, a new Stope Optimiser, an improved scheduler and advances in the Implicit Modelling and Pit Optimiser modules.

“We have a track-record of delivering solutions of the highest calibre and, given the expertise and foresight of our Micromine team, we have no doubt that the latest offering will be of the highest quality and exceed client expectations,” Mr Gabbitus said.

“There are exciting times ahead for the Micromine software. We’ll keep innovating and refining our solution to meet the evolving needs of the industry today and into the future.”

MICROMINE develops the most intuitive, innovative, commercially-advanced and affordable solutions available within the market place. And the foundation behind this innovation is its people.

“We are proud to have been able to create a culture where people want to stay and grow with the company. It’s a philosophy we’ve had since day one, 33 years ago when the company started in 1986 – and the fact that we have several employees who have been with us since day one is living proof that it works,” concluded Mr Gabbitus.
